Meet the Player: Simon Rösner, Germany's Greatest

When it comes to squash royalty, few names carry the weight of Simon Rösner. Known worldwide as The Tree-Chopper, this powerhouse from Germany has carved his legacy not just through thunderous forehands but through years of dedication, resilience, and heart. Now retired from the pro tour, Simon remains one of the most respected figures in the game — and in this exclusive profile, he opens up about where it all started, the moments that made him, and the pasta-fuelled path to World No. 3.

How did you first discover squash?

I first discovered squash through my parents and my older brother. Both of them played — even my mum played squash — so as a little boy, I just tagged along. Honestly, I didn’t enjoy it much at the start, but over time my competitive spirit kicked in. That’s when I set my mind on becoming the best squash player in the world.

Who’s your biggest squash inspiration?

Probably Jahangir Khan. The fact that he went unbeaten for 555 matches is just mind-blowing — you really don’t even need to say more. That record alone makes him my biggest inspiration.

You’re known as “The Tree-Chopper”—what’s behind that nickname?

That comes from my swing. I’ve always had a big backswing and follow-through on my forehand — it almost looks like I’m chopping down a tree. So I got that nickname from my good friend Joey (Barrington) back in the day, and it stuck! 😊

How did it feel reaching World No. 3 and becoming Germany’s highest-ever ranked player?

That was honestly the absolute pinnacle for me — I can hardly put it into words. Since I was a kid, my dream was always to break into the world’s Top 10. To reach World No. 3 and become Germany’s highest-ranked player ever is an incredible achievement that I still look back on with a lot of pride.

Describe your playing style in three words.

Aggressive. Volley-heavy. Furious.

Favourite shot and why?

Definitely my overhead forehand cross-court nick into the front left corner. That’s always been my favourite — there are so many photos and YouTube videos of me in the air, taking that shot while almost moving backwards. It just felt so good to pull it off.

Most memorable moment on court?

Winning in New York City at Grand Central Station against Tarek Momen. Lifting the Tournament of Champions trophy — one of the biggest events in the world — was unreal. I still remember hitting that final straight drive on the backhand side and knowing I’d won the TOC. It was an unforgettable moment.

If you weren’t playing squash, what sport would you be doing?

Honestly, everything in my life was always about squash. I did play tennis on the side when I was younger, but I chose squash because it was just cooler and more fun for me. So I can’t really say what other sport I’d be doing — squash was always my one and only focus.

What’s your go-to pre-match snack (be honest!)?

Honestly, pasta — usually Bolognese — or something else carb-heavy like rice with chicken. I always like to load up on carbs before a match to have enough energy.

Best post-match meal?

Pretty much the same! During tournaments, I stick to a lot of carbs to refuel and stay ready for the next match.

What’s something in your squash bag that shouldn’t be there?

Honestly? Nothing! I only carry what I need for my matches. Lots of shirts, shorts and spare clothes — because as you know, I sweat a lot! But there’s nothing in there that shouldn’t be — just plenty of kit to stay fresh.

One fun fact people might not know about you?

I absolutely love looking after my garden — watering it, taking care of it, almost like an old retired man! It’s something that really relaxes me.

Still Chopping, Just Not Trees

Simon Rösner’s career is one for the books — a player who didn’t just represent German squash, but transformed it. From his powerful swing to his quiet obsession with garden hoses, he’s proof that champions are built not just on court but in the details of their daily lives. Whether you’re a rising junior or a club regular, there’s something to learn from The Tree-Chopper himself: find your passion, swing big, and leave the court better than you found it.
