YNYS MON SQUASH CLUB – A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNITY

YNYS MON SQUASH CLUB – A LEGACY OF EXCELLENCE AND COMMUNITY

For over 50 years, Ynys Mon Squash Club has been at the heart of squash in North Wales, fostering talent, building community, and creating memories that last a lifetime. Established in 1972, the club began its journey when The Beach Hotel built two courts, laying the foundation for what would become one of the region’s most successful and inclusive squash hubs. Just three years later, in 1975, the club relocated to the newly built Holyhead Leisure Centre, where it has remained a pillar of local sport ever since. With a commitment to excellence, bilingual instruction, and a welcoming atmosphere, Ynys Mon has carved out a reputation as a club where everyone from young beginners to seasoned veterans can thrive.

The club’s philosophy has always been clear: squash isn’t just about winning matches, it’s about community, friendship, and personal growth. All lessons are delivered in both Welsh and English, ensuring that language is never a barrier to participation. This commitment to inclusivity has helped Ynys Mon grow steadily, nurturing juniors, adults, and masters players alike, and making squash accessible to all corners of Anglesey.

A History of Achievement

Over the decades, Ynys Mon Squash Club has built an impressive trophy cabinet, reflecting both talent and dedication. From local league victories to cup competitions, the club has consistently performed at the top level in the Eryri League. The pinnacle of recent success came in 2022, coinciding with the club’s 50th anniversary. That year, Ynys Mon achieved a remarkable treble, winning the Eryri League, Carl Davies Cup, and Eryri Plate, cementing its place as one of North Wales’ premier squash institutions.

This success is no accident. It comes from a combination of strong coaching, a thriving junior section, and a culture that values hard work, strategy, and playing with heart. Players such as “The Flying Scotsman” and “Tarzan” have become legends on court, inspiring younger players to push their limits while learning the game in a fun, supportive environment. Over the years, the club has produced players who have gone on to represent Wales at the Masters level, and juniors who have made a mark in regional and national competitions.

While trophies and accolades are impressive, the true achievement lies in the club’s ability to create a community. Families feel welcomed, beginners feel supported, and competitive players feel challenged—all under one roof. This balance of social and competitive squash is a rare quality that Ynys Mon has mastered.

The club currently boasts three internationals, pictured below from left to right: Steve ‘Iceman’ Bird, Duncan ‘1958’ Jones (1958 being the year he first started playing), and Paul ‘Agent 47’ Barrell. Their presence highlights the high standard of squash the club fosters, alongside its welcoming and inclusive culture.

A Celebration of Community

This week, Ynys Mon Squash Club takes centre stage in an exclusive OLIVER Club Takeover, bringing the energy, personalities, and stories of the club directly to our socials. For the week, we’ll be showcasing the club across multiple posts, highlighting the facilities, coaches, players, and vibrant community spirit that make Ynys Mon so special.

The club operates across two venues: Holyhead Leisure Centre, with two courts (a glass-back court with a large viewing area and a wall-back court with a glass door), and Plas Arthur Leisure Centre in Llangefni, which has a wall-back court with a glass door. This setup allows the club to accommodate juniors, adults, and recreational players across the island, providing quality courts and flexible scheduling.

Featured coaches for the takeover include Shaun Sullivan, 2023 Coach of the Year, and Paul Barrell, 2024 Coach of the Year and Welsh Masters International Captain. Their expertise and passion ensure that every player, whether taking their first swing or chasing tournament glory, receives top-tier coaching and support.

The Heart of the Club: Community, Nicknames, and Culture

One of the most unique aspects of Ynys Mon is its playful, tight-knit culture. Players are known by nicknames that reflect their style, personality, or just a bit of fun on court. From “Iceman” to “The Godfather” and “Original Andy,” these nicknames bring a sense of camaraderie and humor to every match. It’s this spirit that makes the club more than just a place to play—it’s a place to belong.

The club has also been transformative for girls’ squash in the region. As highlighted in recent Sport Wales coverage, Ynys Mon has implemented programs that actively encourage young girls to participate, breaking down barriers and creating pathways to success in a traditionally male-dominated sport. The bilingual coaching, supportive atmosphere, and community-first approach have created a space where everyone feels welcome.
