A Parent’s Guide: What to Bring to a Squash Tournament

Tournament day can be exciting—and stressful—for both young players and their parents. Ensuring your child has everything they need helps them perform their best and keeps the day running smoothly. From gear to snacks, clothing to first aid, being prepared is key. This guide covers everything you should pack for a squash tournament, with tips for multi-day events, overnight stays, and busy schedules.

Essential Gear for Your Player

Rackets & Strings
Bring at least two rackets, fully strung and ready to go. Extra rackets can be a lifesaver if a string breaks mid-tournament. Include spare grips to maintain control throughout the day.

Protective Eyewear
Mandatory for players under 19 at accredited events. Consider bringing a spare pair of goggles in case of damage or fogging.

Shoes
Non-marking indoor squash shoes are essential. Ensure your child has a good fit to avoid blisters and provide proper support.

Squash Balls
Pack at least two, preferably the type used in the tournament. Extra balls are helpful for warm-ups and practice before matches.

Towel & Water Bottle
A towel for wiping sweat and a clearly labeled reusable water bottle is essential. Consider a cooler bag to keep drinks fresh during breaks.

Clothing & Personal Items

Tournament Kit
Pack multiple shirts (6+), shorts or skirts (4+), and socks (6+). If staying at a hotel without laundry access, bring extra shirts to stay fresh.

Casual & Warm Layers
Comfortable clothing for downtime and a hoodie or sweater for breaks between matches.

Locker Room Essentials
Flip flops or shower shoes, pajamas for overnight stays, and toiletries like toothpaste, deodorant, and hairbrush.

Sun Protection
Sunscreen, lip balm, hat, and sunglasses if any outdoor areas are involved.

Planning Tip: Check the tournament draw to anticipate the number of matches and adjust clothing accordingly.

Snacks & Hydration

Healthy Snacks
Granola bars, fruit, pretzels, or nuts provide sustained energy between matches.

Electrolyte & Recovery Drinks
Sports drinks or electrolyte tablets help maintain energy levels. Recovery snacks like chocolate milk, protein bars, or peanut butter crackers aid post-match recovery.

Cooler & Ice Packs
Perfect for keeping perishable snacks and drinks fresh throughout the day.

First Aid & Health Essentials

Basic First Aid Kit
Band-aids, blister plasters, and antiseptic wipes are essential.

Medications & Pain Relief
Include any personal medications and general pain relief such as ibuprofen.

Cold Pack
For minor injuries or sprains.

Hygiene
Hand sanitizer and wet wipes keep hands and surfaces clean.

Electronics & Entertainment

Communication & Schedule
Phone and charger, plus a portable power bank for long days.

Downtime Entertainment
Books, puzzles, or games keep children occupied between matches.

Notebook & Pen
Useful for tracking scores, jotting notes, or recording feedback.

Miscellaneous & Comfort Items

Laundry & Plastic Bags
Laundry bags for dirty clothes, and plastic bags for wet or soiled items.

Comfort Items
A small blanket or folding chair for resting between matches.

Weather Preparedness
Umbrella or poncho for unexpected rain.

Cash/Card
For entry fees, snacks, or merchandise.
